The AfghanMade Carpet Design Competition is part of The Carpet Design Awards at DOMOTEX Hannover 2014 (11-14 January 2014); which is the world’s leading carpet design competition held at the largest and most influential fair for floor coverings.
Open to students and young designers who have an interest in product design and textiles, the competition aims to inspire modern carpet designs using the traditional weaving techniques of Afghanistan. Through this, the unique high quality of carpets produced in Afghanistan will be promoted at the hands of skilled Afghans where expertise has been passed down through generations.
Finalists of the Carpet Design Competition, three students and three young designers, will be selected in September 2013 by a judging panel. The winner from each category will be announced at DOMOTEX Hannover 2014.
A sample carpet for each of the designs for the finalists will be completely handmade in Afghanistan using hand spun wool, all-natural vegetable dyes and traditional hand-knotted techniques. This will further demonstrate Afghanistan’s capability to be an international leading source of carpet production. The six designs and samples of the finalists will be on display at DOMOTEX 2014.
AfghanMade Carpets is working to revitalize the Afghan carpet industry by facilitating the cooperative work of international rug importers and Afghan producers as part of an initiative promoting indigenous industries in Afghanistan.
